Basic Character Information Character name: Michael Andrew Elder Age/D.O.B: 34--October 28, 1974 Occupation: Michael works full time at the library. He does text translations via courier and email for private collectors and public institutions. Also, he always wears an unakite pendant on a leather cord around his neck at all times. It helps to bring focus and control to his spells. Tattoos: He has this tattoo on his back, between his shoulder blades. Played-By/PB: Alexis Denisof Animal Familiar: Raven Further Details Species: Witch Abilities and Strengths: Michael has been practicing his craft since childhood and has an extensive repertoire of spells and rites. His main abilities lie in healing, and he accesses power and energy from the use of a raven familiar named Önska (Wish). He can do this at any time, but his powers are strongest during the full moon. Weaknesses: Physically, he's as vulnerable to harm as a human. He has various protective spells which he will use if necessary, but is reluctant to use spells that are harmful or destructive in nature. Immediately after healing someone, he is at risk because it weakens him a little both physically and spiritually. Weaknesses of personality—he's very much a free spirit, and is resentful of being told what to do, but cooperative when properly approached. He can and does rebel when confronted with unreasonable authoritarian demands or dogmatic principles. Personality General description: Three words to describe Michael? Determined, curious, and independent. Michael is very much an individual; freedom-loving, he prefers to be self-sufficient rather than a sheep in society who follows everyone else's lead. He's an independent, highly inventive thinker, fueled by humanitarian ideals. Friendly by nature, he is a good listener and cares deeply for his friends, and is playful and spontaneous. He treasures the unique and looks for it in others. He throws himself one hundred percent into whatever he does and he's highly resistant and resentful of the attempts of others to manipulate him. He never gives up and isn't intimidated by anyone or anything. Confrontation is not a problem. Intensely curious, he loves puzzles and mysteries of any kind and has varied interests—as he says, no knowledge is ever wasted, and usually comes in useful at some point or another so it is best to learn as much as you can as you go along. Adaptable and quick to grasp things both physically and intellectually, he prizes competence and expects much from those around him. He has passionate convictions and deep sensitivities that make him both a good and loyal friend and an implacable enemy. Michael doesn't like to be hemmed in, to be told he cannot do something—he takes it as a challenge to surmount. He believes that original thought will win the day and that new thought is what is needed to change the world. Sexually, he's experimental and loves the unorthodox and the unusual—he's not afraid to follow his desires regardless of gender. Phobias or Fears? He fears failing those who depend on him, and betrayal of someone who has finally gained his hard-earned trust. Past Brief History: Both Michael's parents were members of a coven in their hometown of Asheville, North Carolina, and both very altruistic, idealistic, and progressive, involved in humanitarian and environmental efforts. They were pleased when Michael began seeing his familiar-to-be, and even more so when his power of healing began to manifest. They impressed on him the importance of working with others, of sharing his gifts, of helping those who need it and are open to it. Michael began catching glimpses of a raven at the age of six, and it didn't take long before he realized that not everyone could see it—fellow witches could, but never mundanes, unless the raven, Önska, so wished it. Although he could perform magic from a very young age, when he reached puberty his powers began to blossom, and his parents sent him for study to his aunt Erynn , well-known in Oregon for her healing abilities. He spent many happy summers there learning and refining his craft before beginning practice with his home coven. He made a living with protection spells, wards, and the creation of magical objects as well as very lucrative free-lance jobs translating ancient texts (his degrees are in ancient languages and antiquities). He has two younger sisters, Emily and Megan; Emily owns a coffee shop/café called The Mudhouse (Michael's favorite place to relax) and Megan is currently studying for her doctorate in physics. Emily is a mundane, but Megan is a witch, and is working on a thesis of how magic and physics can be complementary. He grew up in a noisy, loving, competitive family, raised by parents who expected the best of their children and got it. His parents have a great love of learning, wide-ranging interests, and inquisitive natures and passed on those gifts to all their children, though Michael and Megan seem to have gotten the largest share of it. As for his personal life, he loves any form of sexual expression that challenges him and has had numerous affairs with both men and women, vivid but tumultuous. He's had no serious relationships, and has always preferred it that way, though lately, with his banishment to Alaska, he’s beginning to think that a little stability might not be a bad thing. He is deeply angry with the governmental edict forbidding witches to use their powers, particularly those who wish only to help their fellow man. Magic is intrinsic to witches, woven into their DNA and so demanding that they stop using it is like cutting off a hand, or asking them to stop using their eyes. He’s studied and practiced since childhood, and years of magic use cannot be easily set aside. No matter how he protested, how many letters he wrote, how he spoke up, he was unable to get mundanes to listen. He continued his practice in secret, but was discovered and exiled to Birch Creek.
